Presentazione del corso
“Città e metropoli in età
contemporanea”
definizioni e metodi di studio), l’altra dedicata all’approfondimento
del tema “la
città europea e nord-americana in età contemporanea”.
contesto saranno illustrati casi specifici come Londra, Parigi, Marsiglia, Nizza,
Venezia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles.
periodo.
City and metropolis in the contemporary age
The course aims at providing an overview of all those issues that
have marked the history of the city, with particular attention to the
contemporary period. The focus will be put on tools for reading and rendering, mainly those who
have allowed us to trace their specific features, running from
the early nineteenth century until the second half of the twentieth
The course is composed of two portions: the one of
an introductory kind -based on definitions and methods of study-, the other
dedicated to the deepening of the theme "the European and North American city
in the contemporary age". In order to be admitted to the final exam,
students will have to carry out an essay on a theme agreed with the teacher.
The introductory portion will concern problems of
a general nature and definitions linked to specific historical contexts –such
as the ancient city, the medieval city, the city of absolutism-; each one being related to the different tools
that has allowed us to know it and to render its contours -from excavation to
the most recent types of 3D modelling, via photography and cinematography-. The
next portion will cover the span of time going from the "second industrial
revolution" (at the end of the nineteenth century) to the second half of
the twentieth century. In this context specific case studies will be
illustrated such as London, Paris, Marseille, Nice, Venice, New York, Chicago,
Los Angeles. Such an urban geography will provide a vast horizon within which
to place a series of significant plans and projects, in a phase of radical
changes that occurred in the long run.
